Progesterone for Women

Progesterone is a hormone made directly from pregnenolone. All the other steroid hormones are made from progesterone. Its primary function is to keep the uterine lining from building up.


Other functions of Progesterone:

  • Acts as a diuretic. Breast swelling often indicates an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone
  • Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system resulting in calmness

Factors decreasing progesterone production or action:

  • Intense prolonged physical activity, including sex and long distance running
  • Intense emotional stress

  • Estrogen
  • Cortisol and other glucocorticoids (prednisone) at high doses
  • Birth control pills
  • Excess thyroid
  • Melatonin at high dose (over 10mg/day)
