Natural Mood Enhancers

More than ever, mental health is an increasingly popular topic of discussion. With that being said, people still don’t often don’t give this illness the same empathy that they might give to someone with a debilitating physical ailment. Many times those battling depression don’t even know they have something wrong and that it can be fixed. According to the Center for Disease Control, an estimated one out of 10 adults experience depression. One of the troubles with depression or “low mood” is the person suffering will often try to correct it with treatments that potentially have side effects, and then the effort seems fruitless.

The use of natural mood enhancers has become an increasingly popular way to reduce the symptoms of depression. Many of these natural substances may be able to supplement existing prescription medications or in some cases replace them. First, those interested in exploring these products should first speak with their doctor, psychologist or mental health professional to make sure it is right for them.

Several natural supplements that have shown to be effective for boosting mood include:

SAMe – SAMe- short for S-adenosyl methionine, is a naturally occurring metabolite found in the body. SAMe is used to make certain chemicals that play a role in depression. Low levels of SAMe may be due to insufficient amounts of the precursor amino acid methionine (i.e., vegetarianism or inadequate protein intake). Age-related decline in enzyme efficiencies throughout the body can be improved by increasing the supply of enzyme cofactors such as SAMe, B vitamins, and magnesium.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids – A lack of omega-3 fatty acids in a person’s diet has also been linked to mood disorders, particularly clinical depression and bipolar disorder. Ensure that you are using pharmaceutical-grade Omega-3 fish oil in its natural triglyceride form along with lipase to aid with the digestion of the omega-3. Fish oils in the triglyceride form are as they occur in nature.

Lithium Orotate – Known for its ability to help stabilize mood swings related to depression and other mood disorders, with vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) and trimethylglycine to support healthy methylation pathways. Mood disorders are often due to inositol depletion. Lithium recycles and synthesizes inositol by inhibiting the IMPase enzyme. When lithium salts are ingested, the lithium ions interact with several neurotransmitters and receptors in the central nervous system, resulting in a more stable mood.

Folic Acid– Many people who are depressed, especially those who don’t respond to antidepressants, have been found to have a folate deficiency. This can be confirmed with a simple test conducted by a medical professional.

Lavender– Known to enhance relaxation and help curb depression. Often used in aromatherapy, lavender is extracted into oil and can even be found in many everyday scented products like soy candles, soaps, and oil-based perfumes.
